A collection of heartwarming photos showing a 42-year-old woman traveling with her 87-year-old wheelchair-bound mother to dozens of foreign countries has made headlines recently.

An Rong (the youngest in her family) and her mother started their world tour in 2009, accompanied by her sister and her niece. They decided to go after her mom got into an accident and began suffering from depression. Her worsening physical health also required her to use a wheel chair.

“Her face showed that she had been afflicted with pain at that time. She stopped eating and drinking as much and would only lie in bed all day as she became very forgetful,” said An Rong. “My sister and I had to remind her to eat and and to bring her keys before she went out.”

In order to “cheer up” her mom, An Rong decided to take her traveling with her during her annual leave.

According to An Rong, they had previously made a trip to Hainan in 2006. It was her mom’s first time flying. “She appeared a bit nervous,” An Rong said. “And she thought traveling was a waste of money.”

The domestic trip had opened her mom’s mind, and the four continued their tour internationally.

The group chose Southeast Asian countries as their first travel destinations.

So far, they have been to Thailand, Japan, Korea and the Maldives, along with more than 10 other foreign countries and regions.

They had visited the US this past Spring Festival, marking their longest trip yet. During a visit to the Grand Canyon, An Rong accompanied her mother on a helicopter ride.

“It’s been nine years since she flew for the first time. This time, she smiled and felt no fear,” An Rong told reporters.

After visiting more than 10 countries, her mother’s health has improved—and she’s worn out five wheelchairs in the process.
